I have been been painting for 45 years. As a 6th generation Texan born in Beaumont many of the subjects of my paintings are inspired by scenes connected to family history. I also find inspiration for paintings in the scenes of everyday life and from travel adventures. Interior spaces are fascinating subjects. The light from a window on the objects on a table or looking through a door to the rooms beyond create attractive compositional patterns. Recently I used the interior scenes of an old family mill my Great Grandfather began in the 1890’s as the subject of 2 years of painting. The combination of complicated imagery and emotion ties to my family added something special to the process. Years ago in Graduate School at Indiana University, I spent 2 years painting portraits of my family. The distance and the emotional ties made me more sensitive to the paintings. I find the most successful way of approaching a painting is through the feelings of connection and composition.
