Artist's Statement

My work has always been influenced by the brilliant light and color of my environment. The colors, as I move through daily life, are vibrant, intense, changing constantly and play a major part in how I translate color and line on canvas. Light creates intricate, complex patterns and a wide range of colors and values. Light transforms the simplest objects into scenes of wonder and joy. Capturing that drama, which unfolds before me, is both a pleasure and a mystery as each painting becomes my first painting again. Color and light redefine a familiar shape on a table into quiet beauty. Ordinary objects become extraordinary and part of a larger environment of color and pattern. I enjoy images of seemingly chaotic compositions and discovering the clarity of it's form in space. Views from a window or porch reveal the complexity of nature's color and form, joining with man's structural, linear world.

The figure, or portrait, brings a new element of awe and mystery to me. My hope is to capture the unique beauty and grace which belongs to each individual. To achieve this the subject becomes part of my family while I am painting so that I can touch that sensibility needed to express acceptance and admiration.
